HAPPY 10th BIRTHDAY MAKANTS!
Since childhood Siobhan had always been intrigued by sighthounds. Having had her own dogs, and then being able to provide kennelling for Rochdale Dog Rescue, her mind soon turned again towards sighthounds, helping ex racing greyhounds in particular.
So, as you can imagine, Siobhan was feeling a little apprehensive on 11th December 2013, having just set up her own greyhound rescue – Makants Greyhound Rescue – with just 5 greyhounds in kennels.
Little could she imagine that the rescue would go from strength to strength with the help of an army of volunteers. Over time the kennels increased from just 6 to their current capacity of 21 along with the creation of new kennel blocks, enrichment room and kennels shop.
Despite obstacles – such as the pandemic and the economic recession – the rescue has continued to steadily home over 639 greyhounds to date.
Siobhan believes the success of the rescue is down to the volunteers: ‘Our volunteers never cease to amaze me, they are such selfless people who consistently go above and beyond what is expected of them. It is humbling to see how much the greyhounds and the rescue mean to them and many of our volunteers have been with us since the early days. There is no way we could have achieved any of this without them.’
Well Siobhan we never cease to be amazed by you either! It would be hard to find someone who cares so much and works so hard for the greyhounds in her care, they are definitely so lucky to have you on their side. We hope you have a great day today – even though we know you will be working as usual.
