Adoption Intro Image
**PLEASE NOTE : kennels are NOT open for general visits. Any visit must only be by prior arrangement.

IMPORTANT: BEFORE YOU APPLY to adopt one of our hounds please ensure that EVERY ONE in the household is on board with having a dog in their life. Know that dogs will change your life, you will always have to put their needs in front of your own. A lot of time and effort will be required on your part when you do adopt a dog.

Why adopt a greyhound through our rescue?

Makants Greyhound Rescue is a well established, independent and self funded rescue (founded in 2013) with over 700 greyhounds homed by us to date. If you’re thinking of adoption we’ll be with you EVERY step of the way .

We can offer you support, BEFORE, DURING and AFTER Adoption!

BEFORE adoption:

*We offer an opportunity to meet a greyhound and ask questions with a knowledgeable volunteer. An ideal way to find out more about greyhounds as pets (by appointment only)

*We encourage you to walk the greyhounds at kennels several times to get to know the breed

DURING the adoption process:

*You will have a home visit from our rehoming coordinator to discuss suitable greyhounds and be made aware of our homing requirements (details of requirements can be found on our website)

*A two week home trial is offered before adopting your greyhound – with support available at the end of the phone during this time

AFTER adoption:

*Continued phone support where needed

*There is the opportunity to attend monthly nail clipping sessions with your greyhound, held at our kennels in familiar surroundings

*Opportunities exist to attend social sighthound walks in the local area, organised by rescue volunteers. A great way to connect with other sighthound owners

*We have a dedicated private facebook group ‘Makants Amigos’ for adopters of Makants greyhounds, an ideal way to connect with other adopters

*An on site kennels shop, open twice weekly, for all your greyhound needs staffed by knowledgeable volunteers

If you are contemplating adopting from us  please read our adoption requirements below in FULL and ensure that you meet them ALL before completing an application form. If you have questions we welcome them by e mail: admin@makants.uk

ADOPTION

Thank you for considering rehoming one of our greyhounds.
We have some common sense guidelines which we apply to rehoming. However, we are flexible and are always open to discussion with regard to homing any of our greyhounds.
If you are unsure about any of the requirements, we are happy to discuss them with you. You are welcome to call Siobhan on 07960 561 988 or Sue on 07794 463 249.

Adoption Requirements –

*PLEASE DO NOT APPLY UNLESS YOU MEET EACH CRITERIA*

• Due to the size of the greyhounds we prefer children in the household to be over 5 years of age.
• Greyhounds must not be left home alone for extended periods of time, e.g. not more than 4 hours. If they are to be left for longer hours a dog walker or similar carer MUST be in place.
• All resident dogs MUST be neutered.
• It is ESSENTIAL that prospective adopters have a secure garden/yard area with a fence of at least 5 foot high completely  surrounding the perimeter and a lockable gate, free of any hazards. Safety of our hounds is of the utmost importance. Please note: we CANNOT consider applicants who have shared communal gardens.
• Vaccinations MUST  be kept up-to-date.
• A home check will always be carried out prior to adoption.
• A £175 homing donation will be required.
*Four weeks’ free insurance is offered through Petplan, details are provided in our adoption packs*

(Please note: greyhounds either on home trial or adopted from us must NEVER be walked using a retractable lead as these are totally unsuitable for greyhounds. There have been many instances of serious injury caused during their use and the plastic handle, if dropped, can easily ‘spook’ a hound.)

WE DO NOT UNDERTAKE INTERNATIONAL ADOPTIONS.
