APRIL IS ADOPT A GREYHOUND MONTH
ADOPTION STORIES – MARTHA (was JayTee) 700th hound homed
Lovely MARTHA was adopted on the 14th of January this year by Nicola, living in the Stretford area. We asked Nicola to tell us her adoption story:
‘I always wanted a dog of my own, but as it would be my first and I would initially be adopting alone, I knew I couldn’t handle the stress of a puppy or spend two hours a day walking a high energy breed. After some research I landed on a greyhound, and after a bit more research signed up to Makants’ ‘Meet a Greyhound’ event in November where I was able to ask a million questions especially about the suitability of my small yard and tiny car – which was all fine I was pleased to hear.
After a home check and time spent volunteering walking the greyhounds a few times, it wasn’t long before I was matched with Martha (then Jaytee) and took her home on a trial basis. She was quite nervous and scared of new people and noises at first, and she slept so much I was worried there was something wrong with her (turns out that’s just greyhounds!) Being honest I found the first week tough, but I was very grateful to Makants for all their support.
Three months later and it’s been a joy to watch Martha settle into home life, which in reality really took no time at all. Female greyhounds are often known for being more reserved and she certainly lives up to that, but she shows affection in her own unique way and is always excellent company, especially when she’s in “giddy kipper” mode and zooms around the house.
I recommend greyhounds to everyone I meet, and we do get stopped and asked about her A LOT (she is a lovely girl after all). Notwithstanding the big responsibility of owning any dog, I’ve found that greyhounds really are easy to take care of – all they need is an initial bit of patience, some love and a cosy bed…. or five!’
