Bringing our series of adoption stories to a close this month we hear from Anna about her adopted Makants hound LOLA.
Lola is my fourth Greyhound but I have had dogs, mostly rescues, all of my life.
I adopted her from Makants after my family had the heartbreak of losing our previous two hounds within a month of each other. After getting in touch with Makants I was soon invited to the kennels to meet some hounds with a view to adopting. I spent some time with Lola and she was soon with us for her two week home trial. It only took three days though before I was back at the kennels to sign the adoption form! The deed was done and a new member of the family had her paws well and truly under the table.
I’ve always found that greyhounds make brilliant pets. Although initially when in a home they have a lot to learn, they are smart and love routine and so it doesn’t take long for them to settle down and slot in. They need support and patience as any dog who has never been in a house before would. There are obstacles like mastering stairs, meeting new people and manners to learn – such as not clearing the kitchen worktops because you are tall enough to reach whatever tasty things might be on them!
Most of all they simply want to relax into family life and after a few minutes of ‘zoomies’ they go back to snoozing the majority of the day away on their favourite sofa or bed. They are brilliant and often comical companions and can be elegant and regal creatures one minute and then roaching with legs in mid-air and tongue hanging out the next. Within about three months it as though they have been with you all of their lives and life without them feels unimaginable.
Makants offers support before, during and after adoption and my experience was very stress free. There are social dog walks and a dedicated facebook group for owners of Makants hounds to keep in touch and share advice . Although I am a distance away from kennels I still keep in touch and donate my hand made crafts to help raise funds.
